Maggie Gyllenhaal, Laurie Collyer win big with quirky Sherrybaby
The ironies were running strong in Karlovy Vary July 8, with the first outright grand prix win by an American film in the festival’s history: Laurie Collyer’s Sherrybaby, which scored a Crystal Globe.
The low-budget character study of an ex-con drug dealer trying to restore relations with her daughter, which also won a best actress Globe for Maggie Gyllenhaal, is hardly standard American fare, said a low-key Collyer following the ceremony: “I’ve often been accused of making European movies with American characters.”
A small update before I go on a short hiatus, a scan from the magazine Harper’s Bazaar from June 1999 which isn’t really an article it’s just about an event that Saffron attended but I don’t know where else to put it

Added photos from The 41st Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in July 6, 2006 in the Czech Republic.
